Fellowships Program
The RBC Borealis Fellowships recognize and empower emerging research talent in machine learning and AI across Canada. Selected Fellows receive a $10,000 CAD award to support their graduate studies and strengthen their research impact.
Selected Fellows may also apply for a unique co-publication opportunity with an RBC Borealis researcher, designed to help bring their work to leading AI/ML conferences.
This program is designed to strengthen the next generation of AI researchers and deepen collaboration between academia and industry.

Application eligibility criteria

This program is suitable for students pursuing a PhD degree at a Canadian university in the field of machine learning (ML) or artificial intelligence (AI) during the 2025-26 academic year.

Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate strong research capabilities and present a sound research proposal for work related to their graduate degree.

The award will be administered to the winners by their university in the form of a stipend and either as one lump sum payment or in instalments at the university’s sole discretion.

Winners must submit a 2-to-5-page final report to RBC Borealis that outlines how this award helped them advance their studies in the field of machine learning.

To be considered you must have proof of continuous enrolment at a Canadian university between September 2025 and August 2026(or May 2026 if you are Graduating). You will be asked to provide proof of enrolment for the relevant academic year for the award to be administered. RBC Borealis cannot guarantee admission to a Canadian graduate program, but the fellowship will be used to support your studies while you are attending.

Successful candidates may or may not have an established research record yet, depending on their year of study and how far along they are in their program. It is important that they demonstrate potential for future research work. This fellowship aims to give people more resources and opportunities to bring their research goals to fruition.

Successful candidates can come from any university across Canada and any visible minority or other diversity groups or underrepresented groups in AI. No more than two winners from the same university.

Transcripts: Most recent transcripts from Graduate Program (or Bachelor Degree transcripts, if this is your first year in Graduate School). English & original language – combined into one file.

Two letters of recommendation from those familiar with your work. You will be asked to provide contact information for your references to submit their responses.
